Ghost Lasering, Golf Tumblers & Why We’re Not Weird About “Bring Your Own Drinkware”

Ghost Lasering, Golf Tumblers & Why We’re Not Weird About “Bring Your Own Drinkware”

There’s something oddly satisfying about a table full of freshly engraved tumblers.

Maybe it’s the smell of the laser running.
Maybe it’s the sound of Felix the Helix humming away like he’s got a job to do.
Maybe it’s the fact that custom drinkware has become our bread and butter around here.

Whatever it is… tumblers are our jam.

This past weekend, Felix spent his time cranking out a pile of custom mugs for a local golf tournament. Clean logos. Sharp engraving. Nice product. Everybody wins.

But here’s the twist: We didn’t sell the tumblers.

GASP.

I know. Somewhere in the laser world, somebody just clutched their Stanley cup in horror.

See, another company had the client connection and sourced the mugs themselves — but they didn’t have the equipment to actually laser engrave them. So they reached out to us to do the fulfillment side of things.

Around here, we lovingly call that “ghost lasering.”

Kind of like ghostwriting… but louder and with more burnt powder coating.

And honestly? We’re totally okay with it.

The Laser Industry’s Weird Little Secret

There are a LOT of laser shops that only engrave products they personally sell.

And listen — we get it. There are legitimate reasons for that:

  • They know the coating quality
  • They know the product dimensions
  • They know it’ll engrave correctly
  • They don’t want liability if a cheap tumbler turns into a melty disaster halfway through production

Fair enough.

But somewhere along the way, a lot of shops turned that into a hard “ABSOLUTELY NOT.”

And we just… don’t operate that way.

Is it ideal when we source the drinkware ourselves? Absolutely.

We’ve spent years building supplier relationships, testing products, learning which coatings engrave beautifully and which ones make Felix question his career path.

But we also understand reality. Sometimes:

  • a business already has inventory
  • another marketing company lands the order
  • a customer gets gifted products they want personalized
  • a corporation mandates a specific brand
  • or someone gets a smoking hot bulk deal we simply can’t beat
  • That doesn’t mean the project should die on the vine.

That’s where we come in.

We’re Here to Solve Problems, Not Create Them

One thing we’ve learned owning a small-town business is this:
You can either become a gatekeeper… or a problem solver.

We’d rather be the second one.

If someone has inventory and needs it engraved quickly and professionally, we’re usually happy to help if the product is laser-compatible.

No weird ego about it.
No “well if you would’ve bought from US…”
No guilt trip.
No lecture.

Just:  “Cool. Drop ship it over and we’ll get rolling.”

Honestly, some of our best business relationships have come from exactly this kind of arrangement.

Marketing companies.
Promo companies.
Other print shops.
Corporate offices.
Schools.
Event planners.
Small businesses.

A lot of them have fantastic customer relationships and sales channels — they just don’t have a giant laser machine sitting in the corner named Felix the Helix.

That’s our department.

The owala Situation (We’re Still Processing)

Speaking of outside inventory… Let’s talk about Owalas for a second.

Yes. We’re still a little bitter.

If you know, you know.

For a while, we had access to wholesale owala bottles and life was good - that was far and wide our main source of income. People LOVE those things. The emotional support water bottle market is alive and thriving.

Then the wholesale access disappeared and suddenly businesses still wanted custom engraved owalas… but sourcing became a pain.

So what happened?

People adapted.

Now, one of the main ways we personalize owalas is through customer-provided inventory.

A business orders directly from wherever they can source them.
They ship them to us.
We engrave them.
Everybody moves on with their hydration goals intact.

And honestly? It works great.

Quick turnaround.
Professional engraving.
No drama.

Just because we didn’t physically sell the bottle doesn’t mean we can’t make it look awesome.

Felix Doesn’t Care Where the Tumbler Came From

At the end of the day, Felix the Helix is equal opportunity kind of guy

Stanleys.
Owalas.
YETIs.
HydroJugs.
Random golf tournament tumblers.
Mystery mugs from companies we’ve never heard of.

Felix just wants to laser things.

Now… there are occasional products we’ll turn down.

Some coatings don’t engrave well.
Some products are inconsistent.
Some materials are risky.
And sometimes we can tell within about 3 seconds that a tumbler was manufactured with hopes, dreams, and expired glue sticks.

We’ll always be honest about that.

If we think there’s a high chance of poor results, we’ll say so upfront.

Because the goal is still quality.

But generally speaking? We try very hard to find a solution instead of immediately saying no.

Collaboration > Competition

Here’s another thing small businesses don’t talk about enough:

Not every job has to become a territorial battle.

We genuinely enjoy partnering with other businesses.

If another company has the client relationship and trusts us to help fulfill the order behind the scenes, that’s awesome.

That means:

  • the customer gets a great product
  • another small business looks good
  • we keep Felix busy
  • everybody makes money
  • nobody has to buy a $20,000+ laser machine they’ll use twice a month

That’s called collaboration.

And in small-town business? Collaboration matters.

Especially right now.

The world does not need more businesses acting like grumpy little dragons guarding piles of powder-coated tumblers.

There’s enough work to go around.

Quick Turnaround Is Kind of Our Thing

One reason these ghost-laser projects work well for us is because drinkware is already such a huge part of what we do.

This isn’t some random side product we occasionally mess with.

Tumblers are the OG product around here.

Before the wide format printer.
Before some of the other equipment.
Before a lot of the chaos.

There was Felix.

So when boxes of drinkware show up, we already have systems dialed in:

  • rotary settings
  • sizing templates
  • logo placement
  • production flow
  • packaging
  • quality checks

That means we can often turn projects around FAST.

And in the promo/event world, fast matters.

Because nobody remembers they need tournament gifts six months ahead of time.

It’s usually more like:
“Heyyyyy so the event is Friday…”

And somehow we all survive together.

So… Can You Bring Us Your Own Tumblers?

Short answer?  Probably yes.

If you’ve got drinkware that needs engraving, send us a message. We’ll let you know if it’s something we can work with.

Sometimes we source the products.
Sometimes you source the products.
Sometimes another company sends them directly to us.
Sometimes UPS (shoutout to Timmy) drops off a mystery box and we all go on an adventure together.

That’s business, baby.

At the end of the day, we care more about:

  • quality work
  • quick turnaround
  • helping people
  • and making cool stuff

The rest is just logistics.

And Felix the Helix?
Well… he’ll be over here doing what he does best.
